How I Wasted Years on the Wrong Advice
I spent years doing everything I thought I was supposed to do to get in shape. I was dedicated, disciplined, and consistent—but despite all of that effort, I wasn’t seeing the results I wanted. Looking back, I realise that I was following all the wrong advice.
The Cardio Trap
Back in 2019, I was doing over an hour of cardio every day. I truly believed that the more I moved, the more weight I’d lose. No one ever told me to focus on strength training. No one ever told me that nutrition mattered more than burning calories on a treadmill. So, I kept running, spinning, and sweating through endless classes—frustrated that my body wasn’t changing the way I wanted it to.
The “Eat Less” Mentality
I also fell into the trap of thinking that eating less was the key to weight loss. I’d try to eat as little as possible, thinking that if I just had more willpower, I’d finally get the body I wanted. But the reality? I was under-fuelled, constantly tired, and stuck in a cycle of restriction and frustration. I didn’t realise that my body needed more food—specifically more protein—to build muscle and actually change my physique.
The Shift That Changed Everything
Everything changed when I started lifting weights and eating with intention. I learned how to fuel my body instead of depriving it. I swapped endless cardio for structured strength training. And for the first time, I saw real progress—not just on the scale, but in my strength, energy, and confidence.
Fast forward to today: I weigh the same as I did in that 2019 photo, but my body composition is completely different. I didn’t just lose weight—I built muscle, changed my shape, and finally felt in control of my fitness journey.
What I Wish I Knew Sooner
If I could go back and give my 2019 self some advice, here’s what I’d say:
Lift heavy. Strength training is the fastest way to build the physique you want.
Eat enough protein. Your body can’t build muscle out of thin air.
Stop chasing calorie burn. The goal isn’t to burn as much as possible—it’s to fuel your body so it can perform.
Be patient. Real results take time, and consistency matters more than perfection.
If You’re Stuck, You’re Not Alone
If you’re where I was in 2019—frustrated, stuck, and feeling like you’re doing everything right but seeing no results—know that you don’t have to figure it out alone. The right strategy makes all the difference, and once you shift your approach, everything changes.
You don’t need to waste years like I did. You just need to know what actually works.
